Discrimination is often difficult to observe, and yet, despite the antidiscrimination laws discrimination still occurs. The author of this paper is a case manager for individuals with developmental disabilities, and observes the subtle nuance of bigotry almost on a day to day basis. Being articulate and having a name that belies the true ethnicity frequently surprises people when meeting in person. The dumbfounded expression is not easily hidden regardless of one’s efforts to mask it. Statements such as ‘you sounded different over the phone, or you look nothing as I imagined’ are uttered frequently during these meetings. After such meetings, those who are truly prejudiced will request to work with someone else; giving superficial explanations to the request.  For example, ‘we prefer to work with someone with more experience’, or with a man, regardless of the fact the author has more than 20 years of experience in the profession. Being African-American has its hardships. In addition to that adversity, consider the privation of being an African-American woman. Why was the supervisor afraid to approach the author? Because, the African-American woman is often portrayed as a defiant, smart-mouthed, sassy, finger-waving and eye-rolling person, it is easy to understand her fear. The African-American woman has to be diligent in the efforts to contradict the assumptions. Just being female impacts a woman’s behavior. Women are portrayed as and believed to be whiners, nags, flakes and shopaholics. Women are thought to be helpless and in need of rescuing; by a man, of course. In the business world certain jobs have traditionally been considered gender specific. A woman who holds a stereotypical masculine position, such as construction ‘foreman’, is capable to use the equipment just as successfully has the men, but often the men see her as delicate; unable to work too hard, resulting in less productivity and more stress in the workplace. Women want the same respect, opportunities and responsibilities as men. However, chauvinistic attitudes often obstruct a woman’s advancement. The author has overheard such comments as: ‘she doesn’t need a promotion, her husband makes more’, presuming a female employee has no right to a full fledged career, or a larger salary comparable to the male employees. Surprisingly, th e comment was made by a female. Sexism is evident in all areas of life. For example, people debate if women should play a sport traditionally played by men. The year 1896 is when women playing football was first documented. The men’s reaction to the football game was mentioned more than the game itself: ‘the crowd of men looking on, excited by the struggle, closed in with a rush.’ It was not until 1970 that a woman was allowed to play on a men’s semipro football team and not until 1999 did  The Women’s Professional Football League begin playing professional women’s tackle football games (Women’s Professional Football League, n.d). Sexism exists in religion as well. To the Catholic Church, Mary, the mother of God is the most perfect human being. Yet, a woman cannot be ordained as a priest. In other faiths women have more of a role, for instance in the Episcopalian religion; a woman may be a priest. In Judaism rabbis have been known to depict women as envious, unproductive, lazy, greedy, and prone to gossip. In Judaism a Jewish woman’s role in life is traditionally a wife, mother and keeper of the household. The discrimination takes many forms from being denied raises, promotions and getting poor performance evaluations to bullying in schools. The fear of being known as a homosexual or bisexual has led to men hiding sexual orientation from loved ones and doctors thereby possibly putting themselves and loved ones at an increased risk for HIV/AIDS. Just sixty years ago the invention of the television was viewed as a technological curiosity with black and white ghost-like figures on a screen so small hardly anyone could see them. Today that curiosity has become a constant companion to many, mainly children. From reporting the news and persuading us to buy certain products, to providing programs that depict violence, television has all but replaced written material. Unfortunately, it is these violent programs that are endangering our present-day society. Violent images on television, as well as in the movies, have inspired people to set spouses on fire in their beds, lie down in the middle of highways, extort money by placing bombs in airplanes, rape, steal, murder, and commit numerous other shootings and assaults. Over 1,000 case studies have proven that media violence can have negative affects on children as well. It increases aggressiveness and anti-social behavior, makes them less sensitive to violence and to victims of violence, and it increases their appetite for more violence in entertainment and in real life. Media violence is especially damaging to young children, age 8 and under1, because they cannot tell the difference between real life and fantasy. Violent images on television and in movies may seem real to these children and sometimes viewing these images can even traumatize them. Despite the negative effects media violence has been known to generate, no drastic changes have been made to deal with this problem that seems to be getting worse. We, as a whole, have glorified this violence so much that movies such as Natural Born Killers and television shows such as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are viewed as normal, everyday entertainment. Its even rare now to find a childrens cartoon that does not depict some type of violence or comedic aggression. What we do not realize though, is that it is the children that are ending up with problems. Unlike most rational, educated adults, many children are gradually beginning to accept violence as a way to solve problems and are imitating what they observe on television. These children do not understand that the violence is shown strictly because the public wants to see it. They cannot grasp the meaning of ratings and entertainment as well as adults can. All they know is, if the TV portrays violence as cool, then it must be cool! The problem isnt the violence in the media though; it is the medias failure to show the consequences of violence. This is especially true of cartoons, toy commercials, and music videos. Children often do not realize that it hurts to hit someone else because they see it all the time on TV. Everyday a cartoon character is beat up, injured, or killed, only to return in the very next episode, good as new. As a result, children learn that there are few, if any repercussions for committing violent acts. Unfortunately, as long as there is an extremely high public demand for violent shows and movies, the media is going to continue on the same path. And because it looks as though the violence craze is going to continue for some time, we need to be dependent on parents to reduce the effect that media violence has on children, which can be done in so many different ways. First, parents should limit the amount of television children watch per day from the average 3 to 4 hours, which is double the amount of recommended hours, to 1 to 2 hours. Children are exposed to far too much violence every day on TV, mainly because parents see the TV as a convenient babysitter. By limiting the amount of time spent in front of the tube, parents will compel their children to do something more productive like reading a book or playing outside. In limiting TV time, parents also need to monitor what programs their children are watching and restrict the viewing of violent programs. Just because a child is not watching as much violence, does not mean he or she still cant be influenced by it.

California Essay A couple of centuries ago California was distant wasteland with vast deserts and a long sandy coast, it seem unsuitable for living. Today it is a cultural hub of the United States and all its success can be attributed to the ethnic minorities that broke ground in California despite discrimination, violence, and imprisonment. California is unique in that it is one of the few place where industry (mining and lumber) came before agricultural. While the force which brought people to California was the Gold Rush in 1849, it was the lush fertile soil and moderate temperatures which kept people here. African Americans (Frankel 227 -240) In 1849 California was made a state. It was considered a free state which meant that slavery was prohibited. However, there were several â€Å"strings†, which effected African American civil rights, that went along with the title free state. After California became a state, one of the first actions by the state legislature was to deny black citizens the right to vote. Additionally they could not testify against a white person, they could not be formally educated, and they could not own land. Californias African American population was very politically active and held several meetings in the north in hopes of stimulating political change and freedom for black people in the state (1855-1865). The state of California also had a fugitive slave law. Which required slaves that were in California illegally to be given back to their owners. African Americans in the years leading up to the World War II were extremely active in the advance of mining, lumber, and agriculture. Black populations could be found everywhere in minor territory and many of the areas were named â€Å"Negro Bar, Negro Flat, and Nigger Ravin. these were obvious reminders of how their presence in these areas were not welcomed. This is a time in which African Americans had to use not just physical strength but intellect to protect what was rightfully theirs. Remember, African Americans could not testify in court. This means that if any white man should do them hard or steal from them, there was nothing that would be done. In many mines, blacks and whites, worked side by side. Many black men even owned their own mines that were extremely successful. Farming was the basis of Californias economy. When white Americans came to California and set up their experimental farms they targeted southern blacks for employment. They were a source of low waged labor and therefore African Americans were among the first farmers to work with the crops which have made California unique. In 1905 cotton fields were introduced to California. Blacks and Mexican immigrants exclusively worked these fields in Imperial County. The majority of these blacks had come from southern states and were not surprised by the racism that was presence in California. African Americans had to compete for jobs with Mexican immigrants. However, seasonal crop jobs were only a resting point for African American workers who wanted more. These contract jobs were only a means to help African American families move and establish themselves in California. Soon blacks moved forward becoming entrepreneurs, skilled workers, and farm owners. Black people opened business in towns that were flooded because of the gold rush. San Francisco was the hub of most African American businesses. These business flourished until the mining towns closed down and these areas where flooded with the white population who felt superior and opened competitive businesses. White patrons of black owned stores were force through societal rules to switch to white stores. Again, African Americans were told to go back to service oriented jobs. Systematic racism was back in full form by 1920s, restricting African Americans to specific living and working districts. However it is important to point out there African Americans migrated to California and settled areas which were deemed unsuitable for life. Once they prospered the whites would move in and push out the blacks. Based on this cyclic approach to development and grow California was created on the backs of talented and industrious black people who carved life into the deserts and wastelands that California originally was. Native Americans (Trafzer and Hyer 80- 91) In 1848 California became an official territory of the United States. Soon after gold was found and people from across the country came to California to become rich and have a better life. Most whites viewed Native Americans as a nuisance and on top of that as cheap labor they could exploit for their own gains. There was also a law against Native Americans testifying against whites. Between the years 1850 and 1863 could lend out â€Å"indians† who had been arrested. Essentially Native Americans were imprisoned and then used for free labor just like a slave. Ironic in that California was supposed to be a free state. Children were also kidnapped for labor because they were much easier to manipulate then adults. During 1850 through 1887 Indian Reservations were set up for the first time. The agreement that the Native Americans had with the government was they were allowed 7. million acres of land in California but just under 500k were given over to the Native Americans. Much of the reservations were infertile land that could not be farmed. It was not until after 1905 that Native Americans, specifically the next generation, wanted to take an active role in the decisions that effected them. Lost treaties were discovered which allowed Native Americans to claim land and rights that was theirs. These included the right to education, and citizenship. However, the United States government believed that because the Native Americans had not acted quickly enough those conditions were null and void. Essential the government said it was the Native Americans fault for not being pro-active when the treaties were originally drawn up (Heizer 232). It was the force labor or slavery of Native Americans which began Californias semi-feudal economy. Chinese Americans (Wyatt 50-100) The Chinese Americans living in California today have a long history of being residents of California. Some of them are from sixth generation Chinese Americans. Despite racial violent, restrictive legislation and almost no advancement opportunities, Chinese Americans have no just flourished but found a place in the California social landscape. Chinese immigrants came from China and move into San Francisco. There was a great deal of confusion over if Chinese immigrants could become citizens – some where allowed and some werent. Chinese immigrants who were not allowed to become citizens had no rights and therefore could not stake a claim during the Gold Rush. Many of the Chinese people reworked old mines because they could not have their own. In additional there was also a fee of $20 that foreign miners had to pay if they wanted to work a mine. The Chinese too were greeted with violet discrimination. In 1856, a group of white miners raced into the a Chinese American mining community destroying property and killing miners. Despite the violence and the inability to mine gold successfully, Chinese immigrants from work elsewhere – merchants, laborers, and laundrymen. Fishing was one of the industries which Chinese Americans helped promote. Early on there was almost no demand for shrimp in the states much of it was frozen and sent back to China. Soon there was a demand for shrimp in California and Chinese immigrants were pressured by the white competition to buy licenses, make Chinese techniques illegal, and several other things. Making it virtually impossible for Chinese fishermen to make a living fishing, while white fishermen thrived. Chinese immigrants were also the main workers in canneries. They open up and worked in the states first cigar shops and factories. Chinese Americans were also responsible for starting up the first wineries in California, and had the skills for growing and processing delicate crops like wheat, hops, apples, grapes, and pears. The Chinese also worked on the roads throughout California as well as the Central Pacific Railroad. There were several forms of legislation which subordinated the efforts of Chinese Americans in making new lives in California. On top of that the depression that occurred in 1870, was said to be caused directly from the cheap labor of Chinese workers. Following the depression there were several instances of racial violence which lead up to the anti-Chinese movement. This was done in attempt to squeeze Chinese run laundries out of business. It is clear that Chinese Americans played an important role in the growth of Californias economy and are responsible for the birth of the orange and grape crops that make California grape country . Japanese Americans (Chapman 31-42) The history of Japanese Americans in California and what they have contributed to Californias economy is often biased focusing heavily on the vast discrimination they suffered at the hands of the white majority. While their victimization is important it not more important then their vital contributions. Much of their reaction to the various forms of discrimination too the form of strikes, protests, and the constant fight against adversity to become successful in America. Japanese Americans were responsible for the establishment of the flower industry in California. They own, worked at, and grow almost all the flowers and plants sold in California in the late 1800s and early 1900s. They established still existed organizations including the Southern California Flower Market, the California Flower Market, Luck Produce, and the City Market in Los Angeles. Several Japanese business cater to agricultural workers supplying food, lodging, and general merchandise stores. They also helped the agricultural economy of California grow including grapes, fruit trees, strawberries, and several different strains of rice. Japanese Americans not only grew but also prepared and shipped produce across the state. It is clear that Japanese Americans were instrumental in pushing California semi feudal economy into the modern day capitalistic economy of California. Filipinos (Fehrenbacher 160 – 165) The history of Filipinos in California truly begins in 1848 when California annexed. During this time Filipinos found works as general laborers who were paid an extremely low wage. Often workers would have to travel farm to farm, as seasonal work came and went. Many Filipinos moved into larger cities in California but found little work because they were only skilled in agriculture. Due to discrimination and no education , Filipinos were pushed out of their unskilled labor jobs by the influx of immigrants from the Dust Bowl. This is one of the few instances were a ethnic group saw downward mobility in terms of work and then lifestyle. Filipinos have a rich history of being hat makers and tailors but in the hostile white dominating environment of late 1880s California, they existed no longer. Most Filipinos could only find work as ranch hands who were supervised by whites. While Filipinos males struggled in the economy of California, females flourished and were hired as domestics, farm laborers, laundresses, and cannery workers. As the job market for every ethnic group became smaller the white attitude toward Mexicans changed. Previously, Filipinos had been welcomed into the agricultural market as important components and contributors. But soon Mexicans were seem and treated like excess labor. Again Californias agricultural industry was built on the backs of these immigrants and when there was no more work for them, they were cast aside and considered (and it seems still considered economic liabilities).

The story was mainly about Guy Montag who burned books for a living. The mood of this story is set with Montag and his wife, Mildred’s, mixed relationship. They don’t agree on anything and never communicate. They are entirely different from one another because of the influence of society. Montag was having what he thought to be great life, until he met Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse was their seventeen-year-old next door neighbor who was raised to ask why and how. When she met Montag, she changed him by making him think about things he never gave thought to before. Clarisse asked Montag if he was truly happy about his life, and when he thought about Clarisse’s question, he realized that he really wasn’t happy. Montag brought about that everything in his life was false and that he couldn’t trust anyone, so he worked to improve his relationship with his wife. He became interested in books, which made him against the new society. From there on improving his life was what became his first concern. Mildred was an odd woman who was literally â€Å"brainwashed† by society. Mildred had no idea what she would do or why she would do it. She once took so many sleeping pills that she almost died, but in the morning denied everything that happened. She was a pill popping, suicidal snob who was obsessed with material things. Mildred preferred the company of her â€Å"parlor-walls† and seashell radios than the company of Montag. The TV walls were called â€Å"parlor-walls† and Mildred referred to the people on TV as her â€Å"parlor-family.† She was with them most of the time and had nothing else to do all day. The society in which they live in used mind-controlling devices to command all the citizens and Mildred was one of them. This had an immense impact on Montag and Mildred’s relationship. Montag and Mildred do not have an ideal relationship. Montag felt as if they did not sleep in the same bed, and at times, she seemed uncomfortable in his presence. This was made clear when Montag says they are like â€Å"a winter island separated by an empty sea,† (Page 41.) Montag and Mildred almost never communicate with each other.

His final words are a sweet sounding melody of authenticity and prosperity. Native American music has many different musical styles. Within every Native American tribe there is a variety of musical styles and instruments. In response to the research that I have conducted, there are three main musical styles that are going to be my point of focus. The Sioux Grass Dance, the Zuni Lullaby, and the Iroquois Quiver Dance are the principal methods which contribute to Native American music. The Sioux Grass Dance is considered to be the most popular style of Native American Music. As one dances to this music, they follow a pattern known as â€Å"toe-heel. † This consists of the individual placing the left foot in front of the right and repeating with the other foot. Each male dancer makes many personal variations of this dance resulting in a solo display. The costume is an elaborate style that correlates with the vocal approach of music. Bells are tied around the legs of the dancers for an added effect. The Zuni Lullaby illustrates a contrast with Plains singing to assist in confirming that there is not an individual style to Native American music. Through the Native American styles of music, repetition becomes a prominent feature. This is not because the Native Americans can’t find words to fit into the music, but because repetitions with slight variations are often too insignificannot for outside listeners to notice. In the Iroquois Quiver Dance the first thing to strike the ear is what is often known as a â€Å"call and response† form. One singer announces a phrase of â€Å"lexical text,† known as the call, the other singer answers him in a vocal pattern. This continues throughout the song. In illustrating many of the musical styles among Native American music, this has another name known as the â€Å"Warrior’s Stomp Dance. † The voices in the Iroquois Quiver Dance are relatively relaxed compared with that of the Plains singing. Instruments used to portray these various styles of music were often drums of all shapes and sizes, rattles, and often tambourines or bells with other percussion instruments. The drums were constructed by using such materials as clay, iron, wood or aluminum with heads of buckskin, chamois, or rubber. These drums were typically played with a single drumstick, holding a steady pattern of four beats. Also, in addition to these instruments there were wind instruments. The most common was the vertical flute, whistle, and occasionally panpipes. The flute was most often used to express a love song and never for religious ceremonies. Looking at Native American music, one can conclude that there are three main types of music: The Sioux Grass Dance, Iroquois Quiver Dance, and the Zuni Lullaby. Drums and wind instruments are used in portraying the music. The Native Americans dressed accordingly to the music that they dance to. All of these features add to what we have become acquainted with, Native American music.

Climbing it is quite a challenge and those who make it are rewarded. Whit a spectacular view of the city and surrounding country side A trip inside the pyramid is quite the opposite. The dark, unbearably humid corridors and chambers are too much for some people. Chichen Itza is a magical place. I had the opportunity wander around the site for two hours. Watching the massive pyramid take shape through the lifting fog is an experience I will not soon forget. Every year over 40,000 people make the trek to the great pyramid to watch in awe as the snake diamond backed body slowly appears. Great for -side temple- pyramid which was dedicated to the cult of Kukulcan. Inside the Castil lo has been discovered on earlier Toltec-Maya pyramids, with beautifully preserved details.
